In a couple of months time Wahaca are planning to launch a lunchtime take-away service at their Canary Wharf restaurant. They managed to get a bunch of London based burrito loving bloggers and twits/tweeps/tw*ts (what do you call us people who use Twitter?)  together for some feedback.

So on Sunday 10th January I headed over to a freezing cold Canary Wharf for an afternoon of burrito tasting.

I had only been to Wahaca once before (at Covent Garden) and I must confess - based on my burrito ordering experience -  I did not get the best of first impressions. Pretty much everyone else seems to rave about it though and I often hear references to it as the "Mexican Wagamama" I was looking forward to giving Wahaca a second try.

Arriving at the restaurant I was greeted by Cecilia, Mark and Tommi who explained the idea behind the afternoon. The logistics of providing a take-out service were quite different to the normal restaurant and the team were keen to get some customer opinions on what would work best. This meant trying a variety of different burritos and being honest about how they tasted, a tough job but somebody's got to do it!

It was great trying the range of burritos at Wahaca and I was surprised by just how nice the toasted ones tasted! I was also very impressed by the hottest of the salsas. Usually I go for the chicken option so this tasting session was an ideal opportunity for me to try the other meats. The slow-cooked pork was particularly nice but sorry, pickled onions are not for me!

I got to try the try the steak, pork, veggie and chicken along with a few specials. For the first time ever I got to try Chipotle Butter. A little rich, but nice! All in all a really good taste experience.

For me, it is always interesting to meet the people behind a brand and the folks behind Wahaca certainly seem enthusiastic about what they do. For good reason too, the restaurant was doing a fine trade that afternoon. Given the attention to detail shown during the tasting, I have no doubt that the lunchtime burrito take-out will be a lunch worth having. Sadly there are no plans to extend this offering to the other Wahaca restaurants at present. Canary Wharf workers will have the privilege of grabbing a burrito to eat at their desks from this coming March.

Wahaca are at Covent Garden, Westfield London and Canary Wharf.
