California Report

January 30, 2011
With a few weeks in the Bay Area over Christmas I took the opportunity to try a few places I hadn't been to before...

Papalote Mexican Grill, San Francisco
Gordos Taqueria, Berkeley
Cactus Taqueria, Oakland
Taqueria Baja, Capitola

All were good - with the exception of Taqueria Baja - which was mediocre at best. However happily Papalote and Gordos were both especially good and now tie as two of my favourite burrito places in the SF Bay Area.

New Opening: Adobo

December 5, 2010
A new burrito place has quietly opened up on High Holborn. Adobo describe themselves as "Tasty, nutritious, Mexican food, prepared and served by a team who are bonkers about burritos" ... which sounds good to me!

I plan to try a burrito from Adobo soon. They are at 87 High Holborn and currently open only on weekdays between 11.30am and 7.30pm. Their website is here.

El Burrito

December 5, 2010
A couple of years ago, when I first started seeking out London's burrito joints, I heard about El Burrito. This little place on Charlotte Place - basically a little alley in Fitzrovia - had gotten some reasonable reviews and so I put it on my list to check out.

El Burrito's opening hours are quite limited, being weekdays only 11am-4pm, and finding the time to head over there proved quite difficult. Nonetheless with a day off and not much to do, I finally headed over.

I arrived and ordered a take-out chicken tinga burrito. The store is quite nice, small and cosy, and the service was speedy if a little indifferent. I was soon on my way out of the door with my lunch but there was one slight problem...

WHY????

Do you see the problem? Why on earth would you stick a burrito in THAT? WTF? Why the hell don't they use foil? I have no idea of the answer but what I do know is that eating it out on the street was an unnecessarily awkward challenge! In fact awkward enough to totally ruin the whole thing.

So after a two year wait I must say that I am disappointed with El Burrito. A shame really as during the brief moments in which my concentration was on the taste, rather than stopping sauce running down my arm or trying not to drop the whole thing, it was quite good. Not brilliant, but good.

I can't say I'm in a hurry to head back any time soon for this reason alone. I personally prefer other places and those other places offer me the ability to actually eat my take out burrito properly! Perhaps I should try a sit down meal at Mestizo, which is owned by the same people as El Burrito. Have heard some good reviews...

5, 4, 3 CHILANGO

November 30, 2010
The fifth Chilango in the country, the forth Chilango in the South East and the third Chilango in London is coming soon! That's right, London's third Chilango opens in early 2011 at Chancery Lane. Good times!
