A couple of years ago, when I first started seeking out London's burrito joints, I heard about El Burrito. This little place on Charlotte Place - basically a little alley in Fitzrovia - had gotten some reasonable reviews and so I put it on my list to check out.
El Burrito's opening hours are quite limited, being weekdays only 11am-4pm, and finding the time to head over there proved quite difficult. Nonetheless with a day off and not much to do, I finally headed over.
I arrived and ordered a take-out chicken tinga burrito. The store is quite nice, small and cosy, and the service was speedy if a little indifferent. I was soon on my way out of the door with my lunch but there was one slight problem...Do you see the problem? Why on earth would you stick a burrito in THAT? WTF? Why the hell don't they use foil? I have no idea of the answer but what I do know is that eating it out on the street was an unnecessarily awkward challenge! In fact awkward enough to totally ruin the whole thing.
So after a two year wait I must say that I am disappointed with El Burrito. A shame really as during the brief moments in which my concentration was on the taste, rather than stopping sauce running down my arm or trying not to drop the whole thing, it was quite good. Not brilliant, but good.I can't say I'm in a hurry to head back any time soon for this reason alone. I personally prefer other places and those other places offer me the ability to actually eat my take out burrito properly! Perhaps I should try a sit down meal at Mestizo, which is owned by the same people as El Burrito. Have heard some good reviews...
